week 12
well, not your average weekend, thursday left siddique's class, went to the hospital and bang 7.27pm became a wee daddy . . . . but as 2wards the lecture this week, was held at in practical time was in the class at 9.10 lol, tells us about the PSTN (mainly always BT) and the PSDN, these are used to move high rates data at a low price. shows us data on the SDLC, their control field, packet switching, encapsulating packets and sending packets for the X.25 as well as the same types of information for SMDS. . . 2ND part continues into switches stating the fundamental part that they play in networking. U C with the different topologies they can affect the capability to transfer and hold data, goes threw most of the topologies and explains structures threw the nodes, hub and segments . . . finally end 2 end argument, this can be affecting the cost, transfer, care taking, file transfer of the networks, fair enough gives an alternative but with the extra effort having no affect, no point . . .
week 11
woohoo !! not long left to go, next week last lecture for 2ND year (ciara due now on the 29Th), today networking lecture was on wireless LANs, sometimes used in offices, started with info on electromagnetic radiations that ripples at 3x10 (power of 8)m/s, also included picture of the electromagnetic spectrum (haven't seen DAT since 3Th year), gives us info on were they might be used as well as the advantages of using these WLANs. now there is a number of types including blue tooth, irda and wifi the more popular ones. Explains how each would work including the configuration of these and infrastructure. . . next was the grid (started by Larry smarr also referred to as the Internet 2), shows what the grid offers like capacity, collaboration, mass storage, as well as a better load balance. develops on into the information, security and communication aspects of the grid and the applications . . finally in the lecture there was cable modems, info on the up / downstream is very important on this, then give details on the structure and the codependents of the cable modems.
week 10
security (the one thing every computer Internet user should be aware of), now because of different Internet provider and wireless adapters for these, some customers are limited to one type of encryption), this included info on firewalls and actions, public key cryptography (usage only for two people sharing network). continues to explain the problems with the WWW server like poor configuration, active content but then you can get bugs if the two sides aren't secure. lecture further explains into cybercrime (mainly hacking), it is understandable, wud you want any one to have your bank details, etc. . . this is why they have so many laws going back as far as 1968. as 2wards the encryptions - todays mainly only using WEP and WPA-PSK, prob would use wpa-psk, computer generated letter mostly always capitals, but you can also change it to your own, you see some devices like a net gear WG111 v.2 wireless adaptive can let you generate a wep key, but if you know the person well enough you could guess this and then generate to get the 26 characters wep key, not really secure like!!!
week 9
firstly starts with different types of standards for common networks, explaining the layers and the developments from predecessors, gaves info on the MAC, MA and the CMSA, etc . . the cables types for LAN, frame lenghts and tokens (including frames & structures) for each, and finally the TCP/IP and the layers to this protocol. Now when i first heard of ATM, it was in work on the PPPoATM (point to point protocol over asynchronous transfer mode), similarly the info was on about the speed and usages for this. but then there was info on the cells of this, as well as B-ISDN model, then explained each layer to it. Multiplexing techniques, explains all three then moves on to ATM switches giving use info on the speeds that they work in as well as the objectives of this. Practical was on about tracking the speed of the connection and packets in are computers, (do this every day in work with a swish tool)
week 8
error correction & detection, explains y they occur, simple things like equipment failure, dispersion, attenuation, as well as ways to deal with these types of problems. . . also is Shannon's equation and were to use this, further explains error detection like noise, parity checking, hamming distance and block parity checking, CRC (cyclic redundancy code) and check sum . . . then gives use more info on the efficiency of the CRCs. next part of the lecture is an detail part on autonomic computing as well as the need for open networks, continues into knowledge networks and autonomous querying for the networks. next part of the lecture was on data compression, mainly this was only the types of compression there is and types of encoding . . . alot of details on the Huffman coding including branches and unbalanced tree designs. also included was info on MPEG / -1/ -2, explaining the developments that they have made over the last few years. the final part of the lecture was on GPS, now developments would have to be made in this department, can you imagine being able to track anyone from any part of the world . . .
week 7
over half ways threw now, speed of different types of networks (including advantages and disadvantages) on LANs and WANs then the comparison of these two networks, but it does really depend on your needs out of these networks (wires all about the place no thanks). . . then it further explains the structures of these networks as well as there topology (organisation of the nodes), this can affect the speed and the cost of the network, as well as the types of networks available including mesh, star, bus and etc . . . next was routing, basic explanation as well as types of routing used in the world today, then explaining the different types of adaptive routing eg. distributed adaptive routing. then the next part of the lectures was on routing threw bridges as well as backward and address learning. . . (gave a number of useful definitions), da final part of the lecture was on peer to peer networking - alot of info on napster one of microsoft's better competitors, as well as this there was information about windows P2P networking (cudnt leave them out now lol)
week 6
in this week's lecture we had to learn about FTP (file transfer protocol), some users of the Internet cant use this facilities depending on there isp provider ports that they use for other services like email, etc. . . there was also an in depth presentation about the OSI 7-layer model explaining each part individually . . . then the data link protocols (like general functions, frame structures and types of the protocols followed), time outs and delays . . then there was info on TCP, one the basic things needed to work in a computer for access to the internet. . . there was general info on this including service model and byte stream, then the header fields as well as how the information moves in this (flow control & congestion) . . then finally we had info on usage of the computers bandwidth, encoders and decoders (ps nice video lol).
